Williamstown Botanic Gardens

For our latest visit in our Melbourne Garden Series, we dropped by Williamstown Botanic Gardens.

Set on a few hectares just a short stroll from the train station and the beach, this gorgeous garden features towering established shady trees, a tropical pond and fountain, grassy fields and meandering flower beds. The gardens first opened in 1860, making Williamstown Botanic Gardens one of the first public gardens in Victoria.

History brings two things - well-established trees and of course the requisite old statue of a chap called Alfred with an intense beard, who started the first local newspaper (amongst other things).

One thing that jumped out at us at Williamstown Botanic Gardens is the difference between the diversity of trees and flowers. So lets review and break them down separately:

Tree rating: The golden elm looks like it is out of a Jane Austen novel. The circle of Moreton Bay Figs is gorgeous. And while I don't love palms, the avenue of palm trees feels dramatic, inspired and at home next to the beach. We give the trees here an 8/10.

Flower rating: There weren't a huge number of flowers when we visited. Perhaps the 'stop cutting the flowers, they are for everyone' signs may be an indication of grander floral intentions but for now it's a tad lacklustre. At the time of writing in end summer, you'll spot red hot pokers, dahlias, lillies, and globe thistles. The flowers feel more like a secondary perk, so don't come here if you're just looking for gorgeous flowers. We give the flowers a 4/10 for effort.

The stunning trees and Port Phillip Bay in the distance do make this a hot destination for wedding photos. So much so that there is a reserved space for limos on weekends at the entrance on Osborne Street.

Our take though is that this would be a lovely spot for a picnic on the grass, reading a book on a blanket, or locals wanting a quiet stroll with your dog (dogs allowed on lead).

Overall, worth a visit and a nice escape from the hubbub of the city.

If you're after more info, the Friends of Williamstown Botanic Gardens have a website with lots of historical and botanical details.
